Changing the Width of Your Squarespace Website
Hello, Tom from Tenji Digital here! In this blog post, I'll show you how to increase the width of your Squarespace website. This simple tweak can help you make better use of the available space, especially if you're looking to adjust the positioning of images and text blocks. Let's dive in!
Step-by-Step Guide to Increasing Page Width
1. Enter Edit Mode
First, enter edit mode on your Squarespace website. In our example, we have a section with an image and some text. We're happy with the size of the image, but we want to shift it slightly to the left.
2. Understanding the Grid
You'll notice the edge of the working grid on the left. If you drag the image too far to the left, beyond the grid, it snaps into "full bleed." This isn't what we want since we're only adjusting the position, not the size. The same thing happens if you try to extend a text block to the right.
3. See your Current Canvas
Press "G" on your keyboard to enable the grid. You'll see the current working area and a lot of white space on the left and right margins. To utilise this space, we need to increase the page width within Squarespace.
4. Adjusting Page Width
Here's how you do it:
Click the Site Styles icon in the top right corner.
Scroll down and click on Accessories at the bottom.
Then, select Spacing.
In the Spacing section, you'll find the Page Width option. You can adjust this as much as you like, along with the site margin.
Pro Tip: A page width of 1920px works perfectly. It looks great on mobile versions as well as on much larger screens.
5. Save Your Changes
Once you're happy with the width, click on Save in the top-left corner and close the Site Styles window.
6. Check Your New Site Width
Press "G" on your keyboard again, and you'll see that the grid is much wider now. This allows you to move or stretch blocks closer to the margin of your website.
Pro Tip: If your grid doesn't look any different, you may need to refresh your page.
Final Thoughts
Increasing the width of your Squarespace website can make a big difference in how you use the available space. I hope this guide helps you achieve the look you want for your site. Happy designing!
