LAND VALUE TAX

The Land Value Tax (LVT) website advocates for a fair and transparent tax system based solely on land value. It explains how LVT can replace Council Tax and Business Rates, ensuring simplicity, fairness, and economic efficiency. The site outlines a ten-year transition plan, addressing concerns and highlighting benefits such as discouraging land speculation and providing stable public funding. Through clear explanations, FAQs, and engagement opportunities, the website educates and encourages visitors to support LVT reform.

This interesting project was like none I’d worked on before. I needed to take an extremely text-heavy, DIY website and make it visually appealing and engaging. You can see the “before” website at the bottom of this page.

Project Goals

Due to the large amount of text on the original site, gathering copy wasn’t an issue - in fact, the challenge was to be able to display a large amount of copy in a variety of different ways to ensure the web pages didn’t look boring and kept the user engaged and reading.

Design Approach

Given that Land Value Tax focuses on “land”, green was the obvious colour to use throughout the website as an accent colour for buttons and headings. Combining that with off-black copy on a mix of grey and white backgrounds worked well.

Again, focusing on the “land” theme, the imagery wasn’t difficult to come by, so it was great to show off the beautiful British landscape in a project like this.

Key Features

This website includes several key features designed to enhance user experience and functionality:

  • Coded Feature Sections: To prevent pages from being displayed as walls of text, I created “did you know” sections that break the text up a bit, with inspiration coming from educational textbooks, of all places!

  • Downloadable Resources: Campaign flyers id a free resource being offered by the client to supporters. These were uploaded to the site and can be downloaded by anybody with a single click.

  • Mobile Optimisation: Recognizing the importance of a mobile-friendly design, the site was built to be fully responsive, ensuring a smooth experience on all devices.

The Outcome

The final result was a complete modernisation of a “2003-style” self-hosted website, which still presented all of the rich information and advice the client offers, but now on a great-looking and far more engaging Squarespace website.
